A nuclear accident is a disaster in a nuclear power plant or any location where radioactive materials are stored. Nuclear accidents usually involve the emission of radioactive materials into the environment, so it is important to know the measures to take to ensure your safety.

You are within the emergency planning zone if you are about 10 miles from the nuclear plant. If you are outside during a nuclear accident, you should take cover in an enclosed building and shut the doors and windows as fast as possible.

You should also try to stay away from dust clouds or plumes. Avoiding plumes or dust clouds makes you less susceptible to inhaling radioactive materials. If you are exposed, it is important that you take off your clothes and immediately take a shower. This gets rid of radioactive residues that might be on your body.
